1967年毕业于原北京农业大学植物生理生化专业。自1993年起任中国农业大学生物学院教授、博士生导师。曾去德国、美国、英国、韩国以及香港等国家和地区进行关于植物抗逆性与气孔运动机理的合作研究。1997年被科技部聘为国家攀登计划预选项目"主要农作物高产高效抗逆的生理基础研究"项目首席科学家;1999年被科技部聘为国家重点基础研究发展规划项目"作物抗逆性与水分、养分高效利用的生理及分子基础"项目首席科学家。现兼任北京植物生理学会副理事长、中国植物生理学会环境生理与营养生理专业委员会主任委员。
近年来主持或参加包括由国家自然科学基金重大/重点/面上项目、国家攀登计划预选项目、国家重点基础研究规划项目、农业部重点项目等资助的科研项目共10项。主要从事植物逆境信号转导和气孔运动的细胞与分子机制,以及作物抗逆与节水的研究。在PNAS、Plant Physiology、Protoplasma、中国科学、科学通报等国内外学术期刊上发表论文80余篇,出版编著4本,获省部级科技进步奖2项,申报专利2项。先后指导博士研究生39名、硕士研究生25名、博士后2人。
