Basic research on bacteria has had significant impact on many areas of science. This research has revealed many fundamental features of all living cells, and has produced novel tools that allow us to study previously inaccessible problems. Discoveries continue to be made using model systems such as Escherichia coli and many other microbes with unique properties. Making discoveries often relies upon insights from studying the physiology and genetics of model organisms coupled with newly developed experimental tools and creative ideas.
