Dr. Xu received his medical degree from Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hongzhou in 1983, his M.S. from the Department of Neurophysiology at the Institute of Acupuncture in the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing in 1987 and served as Research Associate in the same department from 1988 to 1990. He was a Guest Researcher in the Department of Physiology at the University of Goeteborg in Sweden in 1991. He received his Ph. D from the Department of Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in 1997 and was appointed as Postdoctoral Fellow (1997-2000) and Forskare (since 2000) at the Karolinska Institute. He was appointed as Guest Investigator of the Institute of Neuroscience in 1999. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
